  • Don’t leave appliances on standby, as it wastes between 10-60% of electricity it uses.
  • Turning your thermostat down by just 1 degree could cut your heating bills by 10%
  • Always turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Use energy saving light bulbs, they last over 10 times longer and use 4 times less energy
  • Make sure you turn off your computer at work when you leave
  • Choose online paperless billing and statements for as many utilities as possible
  • Only boil as much water as necessary
  • Close curtains at night
  • Consider double glazing, as it can reduce amount of heat lost by 50%
  • Cover pots and pans when cooking
  • Have a shower instead of a bath
  • Defrost your fridge regularly
  • Always wash a full load and at a low temperature
  • Dry your clothes naturally, and outside whenever possible
  • Because hot air rises, loft insulation can help too, as about 25% of heat loss occurs through uninsulated lofts.
  • Draught-proof your home
  • Install cavity wall insulation
  • A lagging jacket for your hot water tank and insulated pipes help keep the heat in
  • Replace your boiler if it is more than 10-15 years old with a more energy efficient one

As you can see, it’s not hard to start saving energy today. If you start making as many changes as possible, your savings will soon add up.
