BT plans Super-Fast Broadband
BT plans UK's largest ever investment in Super-Fast Broadband
Michael Phillips, Product Director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk comments on the latest announcement by BT.We welcome the latest move from BT which clearly demonstrates their commitment to bring the UK's broadband users ‘up to speed'. This initiative aims to provide a national service but it should be noted that a significant number of customers will actually get 60Mb/s, with the full 100Mb/s service only available to new build properties.
BT must work hard to ensure that 100Mb/s really means 100Mb/s when the service is finally delivered to customers since a number of providers such as bethere and O2 already offer 24Mb/s and have plans to make this even faster.
In a recent survey we conducted, asking what consumers would do with a super-fast broadband connection, the highest proportion of respondents said they were most interested in downloading films and high definition TV shows but relatively few said they currently spent much time watching films and TV shows online. This highlights the fact that if connection speeds were improved through projects like this latest BT initiative, consumers would have a much broader range of services they could make use of.
It is important to note that the UK lags behind other European countries such as France, which already has an established ‘Super-Fast' broadband service. We urge the Government to support this latest initiative from BT and would recommend that competitors such as Talk Talk and Sky are given the same regulatory privileges and allowed to continue to make the broadband market a competitive environment for consumers.
