Perhaps you are about to head off to university, or start living with some of your friends you have made on campus. But whatever position you are in, you must to make sure that all your possessions are adequately covered. After all, have you thought how you would cope if your laptop, PC or ipod was damaged or stolen?
Student’s insurance
Most standard insurance policies will only pay out for theft of an item if the doors and windows of the property are locked at all times, but if you live in a shared house or in university halls this simply may be impossible.
However, the good news is that there is a range of specialist student insurance policies out there, all tailored to student life. Laptops stolen or damaged on campus can be covered, as well as ‘walk-ins’ through an unlocked door.
But it gets better – because unlike the majority of standard policies, student policies allow you to cover items in your own room, so you won’t end up paying for your housemates’ possessions and increasing your student debt.
However, there are exceptions to the rules. If any of your possessions are stolen whilst you are on holiday, for example, you may not be covered - so think twice before leaving those valuables in your room over the summer or winter recess.
Also, most contents insurance policies include tenant’s liability insurance, but your landlord may insist that you have this kind of insurance if you are renting a property from them, especially if you are living in a flat.
