Cheaper Home Insurance

There are many ways that you can get a cheaper home insurance premium, depending on your property and the contents it contains.

You may get a discount if:

  • You increase your standard policy excess - If you are willing to pay more before you need to make a claim, your insurance provider will offer you a substantial discount.
  • You buy buildings and contents insurance - You may be offered you contents insurance when you take out buildings insurance. But just because your building’s insurer may be suitable for your structural needs, they may be totally unsuitable for your contents. So don’t be fooled by eye-catching discounts.
  • You may be offered an introductory discount
  • You have a number of years of no claims discounts - The fewer the claims you make, the lower your premium.
  • You have crime prevention measures installed - According to Tesco, fitting a burglar alarm (NACASS standard) will reduce your premium by around 8%. Linking it to the police network will cut off a further 5%, and fitting windows and doors with secure locks could cut your premiums by a further 5%.
  • Make sure you have adequate locks on all doors and windows
  • Fit an alarm and link it to the police network
  • Join a neighbourhood watch scheme
  • Fit and maintain smoke alarms
