Britons heading off to the sun this winter are prepared to add an extra £195 to their credit card balance, the findings of a new survey suggest.
Research conducted by Abbey discovered that 15 million Britons are planning to take in some winter sun, despite concerns about the economy at home.
Those venturing overseas will spend an average of £546 on their break, with £195 of that cost being funded by credit card.
Callum Gibson, Abbey's head of credit cards, said it was understandable that so many people are keen to escape the cold weather and economic gloom, but warned: "If you are heading abroad this winter then it's important to consider how you can make your money work harder."
He added that people should think carefully about what type of plastic to use abroad and in particular the fees charged by some providers.
Undertaking a quick credit card comparison may help consumers to identify products that do not charge additional fees for overseas usage.
A recent study by Fair Investment Company found that men are much more likely to spend money on non-essentials than women.
