Over 1.5 million credit cards a month are registered with MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa, Apacs, the UK's payments association, has announced.
The body stated that many people are keen to stop online shopping fraud by protecting their plastic, which could include reward credit cards, as cardholder registration for these schemes has increased by 150 per cent over the last 12 months.
Director of communications at Apacs Sandra Quinn said: "Shopping online is now very much part of our everyday life and it is excellent news that more than 25 million cards have registered with MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa."
She added that more than half of online shoppers have registered their credit cards with the security schemes.
Meanwhile, Moneyfacts has warned consumers that many retailers have increased the interest rates on their store cards in the run-up to Christmas, with some shops charging customers 28.9 per cent APR on purchases.
